ShalamarImages > " Oregon's Painted Hills "
This surreal landscape is tucked away in the hills near Mitchell Oregon. The Painted Hills Unit is one of three that make up the John Day Fossil Beds Monument. The formations you see here are formed millions of years ago. the color comes from floodplain deposits made up of Shale, Siltstone, Mudstone and Laterite that produce the red color you see here.

Another perspective showing the beauty these hills possess.
ShalamarImages > " Painted Hills Patterns "
An enhanced view taken at 200 mm reveals the beautiful patterns that make up the Painted hills. Although the hills give the appearance of a velvet texture they are actually made up of hard clay and look quite rough close up. The hills are completely in hospitable to plant-life.
ShalamarImages > " Red Hill "
This really is called Red Hill and can be found within the Painted Hills Unit above. This otherworldly landscape must be seen in person to really appreciate it's ancient geology.
